The Besa River is a cool river found in northern British Columbia, Canada. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one called the Prophet River. This river winds its way through the amazing Muskwa Ranges mountains. It's super important for the Redfern-Keily Provincial Park, which is a big protected area. The Besa River even has a special rock layer named after it, called the Besa River Formation!

Where Does the Besa River Flow?

The Besa River starts high up in the Muskwa Ranges. These mountains are part of the Northern Rocky Mountains. The river's journey begins on the slopes of big mountains like Great Snow Mountain and Mount Circe. It gets its first water from melting glaciers, such as the Ithaca Glacier.

As it flows, the river moves east through the beautiful Redfern-Keily Provincial Park. This park was created to protect the river and its smaller streams. The Besa River then travels between Redfern Mountain to the north and Mount Ulysses to the south. Along the way, it collects more water from the Achaean Glacier.

The river then flows through Redfern Lake. After this, it turns north around Mount Dopp. Here, it gets more water from Fairy Lake and Nordling Creek. Petrie Creek and Keily Creek also join the Besa River. The river then turns east, and later north again, after Neves Creek flows into it. Granger Creek also adds its water to the Besa River.

Finally, the Besa River flows into the Prophet River. This happens at an elevation of about 820 meters (2,690 feet). The Besa River's water then continues its long journey. It travels through the Prophet River, then the Muskwa River, the Fort Nelson River, the Liard River, and finally the mighty Mackenzie River. All this water eventually reaches the cold Arctic Ocean!

Rivers and Glaciers Joining the Besa

Many smaller streams and glaciers add their water to the Besa River as it flows. These are called tributaries. Here are some of them:

  • Ithaca Glacier
  • Achaean Glacier
  • Redfern Lake
  • Fairy Lake
  • Nordling Creek
  • Petrie Creek
  • Keily Creek
  • Neves Creek
  • Granger Creek
