The Besaya valley (which means Valle del Besaya in Spanish) is a special area in the middle of Cantabria, a region in Spain. It follows the path of the Besaya River. This area is known as a comarca, which is like a district or region. The main town and capital of the Besaya Valley is Torrelavega.

The Besaya River and Its Basin

The Besaya River is very important to Cantabria. Its basin, which is the land area that drains water into the river, is the biggest in the whole region. It covers about 1,026 square kilometers (396 square miles).

How Much Rain Does the River Get?

Every year, the Besaya River basin gets a lot of rain. About 0.3 cubic kilometers of water falls as rain. This water helps the river flow strongly.

River's Journey to the Sea

The Besaya River flows northwards. It eventually empties into the Bay of Biscay, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean.

River Features and Uses

In some parts, the river flows through deep, V-shaped valleys with steep sides. These areas are perfect for building dams. These dams help to create electricity for the region. However, the lower parts of the river can sometimes flood, especially after heavy rains.

The Besaya Valley Comarca

The Besaya Valley comarca is made up of eleven different towns and villages, called municipalities. These places work together as part of the comarca.
