Betlan (pronounced bel-LAN) is a small village located in the Val d'Aran area of Spain. It's part of the Vielha e Mijaran municipality. This special village is even listed in Catalonia's Inventory of Architectural Heritage, meaning its buildings and history are important to protect.
About Betlan
Betlan is a tiny village high up in the mountains. It sits at 1,047 meters (about 3,435 feet) above sea level. You can find it on a flat area on the right side of the Garonne River. The village is surrounded by beautiful fields and green meadows.
A Small Community
Betlan is one of the smallest villages in the Val d'Aran. In 1981, only 12 people lived there! By 2016, the population had grown a little to 31 people. The few houses in Betlan are built around a large central square.
The Church of San Pedro
On the west side of the main square, you'll find the old church of San Pedro. This church is one of the oldest religious buildings in the entire valley. It was probably built way back in the 11th century, which makes it over 900 years old!
- Over the centuries, the church has had many changes and additions.
- Even with these changes, it still has its original Romanesque apse. An apse is a rounded part of a church, usually at the eastern end.
