Better Cheddars first came out in February 1981. When they were first made, they included a special ingredient called sourdough culture. This gave them a unique taste.
Early TV commercials for Better Cheddars called them the "San Francisco-style" snack cracker. These ads featured actor and comedian Ron Carey. He played a cable car operator who sang the Better Cheddars song while eating the crackers.
The name "Better Cheddars" became a special, officially protected name, called a registered trademark, in February 1985. The idea for the brand and its name came from Nabisco's marketing team in Manhattan.
What Happened in 2018 and 2019?
In 2018 and 2019, it was harder to find Better Cheddars. This happened because a company that supplied an ingredient, whey powder, had to recall some of its products. A recall means a company asks for its products back because there might be a problem with them.
This recall affected many cheese-flavored snacks, not just Better Cheddars. Other popular crackers like Ritz and Goldfish were also impacted. Because of this, there was a shortage of Better Cheddars in some stores, especially in the Midwest, in early 2019.
Different Kinds of Better Cheddars
Over the years, Better Cheddars have been made in a few different ways. You can usually find the original flavor. They have also made versions with less salt and reduced fat.
