Better Cheddars were first sold by Nabisco in February 1981. When they first came out, they had a special ingredient called sourdough. This gave them a unique taste.
Early Advertisements
These crackers were advertised on TV as a "San Francisco-style" snack. The commercials featured an actor named Ron Carey. He played a cable car operator. He would sing the Better Cheddars song and eat the crackers.
The name "Better Cheddars" became a special, protected name in February 1985. This means no other company could use that name for their crackers. The idea for the brand came from Nabisco's marketing agency, The William Esty Company.
Production Challenges
In 2018 and 2019, it was hard to find Better Cheddars. This happened because a company that made whey powder had to recall their product. Whey powder is used to make many cheese-flavored snacks. Other crackers like Ritz and Goldfish were also affected. By March 2019, it was still difficult to find Better Cheddars in some stores.
Different Kinds of Better Cheddars
Better Cheddars have been made in a few different ways. You can usually find the original flavor. There have also been versions with less salt and less fat.
Past Flavors
- Better Cheddars 'n Onion: This flavor came out in 1987. It was a mix of cheese and onion. However, it was stopped soon after it was introduced.
