The Beverly mango is a special type of mango that first grew in south Florida, USA. It's known for its delicious taste and is a favorite for people to grow in their own yards.

How the Beverly Mango Started

The Beverly mango was first grown in Florida. It was thought to be a seedling from another mango called 'Haden'. The Zill family, who are famous for growing mangoes in Boynton Beach, Florida, chose it.

Later, in 2005, scientists studied its family tree. They found that the 'Cushman' mango was likely one of its parents.

This mango didn't become a huge commercial success. This was because its skin stays mostly green even when it's ripe. Most people expect ripe mangoes to be brightly colored. However, the Beverly mango became very popular for home gardens. People loved its great flavor and how well it resisted diseases. It also ripens later in the season, from July to August in Florida. Because of these good qualities, you can now buy Beverly mango trees from nurseries in Florida.

The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden even picked the Beverly mango as a special choice. They featured it at their mango festivals in 2008 and 2009.

You can find Beverly mango trees in important plant collections. These include the USDA's plant collection in Miami, Florida. They are also at the University of Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center. Another place is the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park, both located in Homestead, Florida.

What the Beverly Mango is Like

The Beverly mango fruit is usually round or oval. It might have a small bump at the bottom, but often doesn't. Each mango can weigh anywhere from about one pound to three pounds.

When the fruit is ready to eat, its skin stays mostly green. It might have some yellow patches. Inside, the flesh is smooth and doesn't have stringy fibers. It has a rich, sweet flavor. The seed inside is usually just one single embryo. This means it will grow true to type if planted.

The Beverly mango tree itself grows low and spreads out. It's easy to keep it at a height of less than 20 feet. This makes it a good choice for home gardens.
