About Beyeria Conservation Park

This park is a protected area. This means it's a place where nature is kept safe. It helps protect important plants and animals. The park covers about 188 hectares (465 acres). That's like 465 football fields!

Why Was It Created?

Beyeria Conservation Park was officially created on May 14, 1987. Conservation groups and plant experts asked the government to protect this land. They wanted to stop more land from being cleared for farming. They also wanted to save rare plants that grow there.

The park is named after a special plant. This plant is called the Kangaroo Island Turpentine Bush. Its scientific name is Beyeria subtecta.

What's Special About Its Nature?

The park has sandy soil that is reddish-brown. This type of soil is called lateritic. The ground is mostly flat. But it has small, shallow dips called gilgais. These dips can hold water. There's also a small swamp in the park's southeast corner. This swamp fills with water during certain seasons.

The park is home to a type of woodland forest. It has many Eucalyptus cneorifolia trees. You can also find Melaleuca uncinata and Callistemon rugulosus plants. These grow especially well in the swampy areas.

Rare Plants You Might Find

Besides the Kangaroo Island Turpentine Bush, other rare plants live here. These plants are endemic, meaning they only grow in this area. Some examples are Grevillea muricata, Olearia microdisca, and Caladenia ovata. Protecting these plants is a big reason the park exists.

How Is It Protected?

Beyeria Conservation Park is a Category IV protected area. This is a special way the IUCN classifies protected places. Category IV means the park is mainly for managing habitats and species. It focuses on protecting specific plants or animals and their homes.

In 1991, the park was also listed on the Register of the National Estate. This was a list of important natural and cultural places in Australia. That list no longer exists today.
