Haines is a special place, or locality, located in the Australian state of South Australia. It sits on the south coast of Kangaroo Island, looking out over the big body of water known as the Southern Ocean. Some international maps might call this area the Great Australian Bight.
This locality is about 129 kilometers (about 80 miles) southwest of Adelaide, which is the capital city of South Australia. It's also quite close to Kingscote, which is the main town on Kangaroo Island, located about 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) to the north.
Discovering Haines
Haines was officially given its current boundaries in March 2002. The name "Haines" has been used for a long time in this area. It comes from an older land division called the Hundred of Haines. A "Hundred" was a way to divide up land in the past for things like farming and ownership.
What is Haines Like?
Most of the land in Haines is used for primary production. This means people use the land to grow crops, raise animals, or get natural resources. It's like farming or other activities that produce raw materials.
Along the beautiful coastline, and in an area called the Beyeria Conservation Park, the land is set aside for conservation. This means these areas are protected to keep nature safe. It helps to preserve plants, animals, and their habitats for the future.
Who Looks After Haines?
Haines is part of a few different government areas. These areas help manage the community and its needs.
- Federal Government: Haines is in the federal division of Mayo. This is the area represented by a politician in the national Australian Parliament.
- State Government: For state matters, Haines is part of the electoral district of Mawson. This means people in Haines vote for a representative in the South Australian state parliament.
- Local Government: At a local level, Haines is managed by the Kangaroo Island Council. This council looks after things like local roads, parks, and community services on Kangaroo Island.
