Muston is a small place in South Australia. It is located on Kangaroo Island, which is a large island off the coast. Muston looks out over a beautiful coastal area called Pelican Lagoon. It is about 127 kilometers (about 79 miles) southwest of Adelaide, the capital city. It is also about 21 kilometers (about 13 miles) southeast of Kingscote, the main town on Kangaroo Island.

The Story of Muston

Muston got its name from a person named Arthur Muston. He started a company called the Colonial Salt Company. This company later became the Commonwealth Salt Refining Company in 1905. The area was officially named Muston in March 2002.

Salt Mining History

For many years, salt was an important product from this area. From 1910 to 1954, a special railway line ran through Muston. This railway carried salt from a mining area called Salt Lake, which is now in a nearby place called Haines.

The salt was moved to a jetty (a pier for boats) on the Pelican Lagoon coastline. From there, it was loaded onto ships. These ships then took the salt to Edithburgh to be cleaned and made ready for use. The old jetty is no longer there today.

Where is Muston Located?

Muston has clear boundaries that help define it. To the west, part of its border is the American River Road. To the south, it is bordered by the Hog Bay Road. To the east, Muston meets the coastline of Pelican Lagoon.

What is the Land Used For?

Most of the land in Muston is used for primary production. This means people use the land to grow crops or raise animals. It is like farming.

There is also a strip of land along the coastline. This area is special because it is used for two main things. Part of it is for conservation, which means protecting nature and wildlife. The other part is for a settlement area. This area is described as a 'rural living precinct', meaning it is a place where people can live in a countryside setting.

How Muston is Governed

Muston is part of different government areas. These areas help manage services and make decisions for the people living there.

  • Local Government: Muston is part of the Kangaroo Island Council. This is the local government that handles things like roads, parks, and waste collection on the island.
  • State Government: For state-level decisions, Muston is in the electoral district of Mawson. People living in Mawson vote for a representative to speak for them in the state parliament.
  • Federal Government: At the national level, Muston is in the federal division of Mayo. This division elects a representative to the Australian Parliament in Canberra.
