Bhagwatikumar Sharma (born May 31, 1934 – died September 5, 2018) was an important Indian writer and journalist. He wrote many books, stories, and poems in the Gujarati language. Born in Surat, he also worked as an editor for a daily newspaper for many years. He won several big awards for his writing, including the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1984 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988.

About Bhagwatikumar Sharma

Sharma was born in Surat on May 31, 1934. His family was from Ahmedabad. His father was a pandit, which means a scholar, of the Samaveda. Sharma finished high school in 1950. Later, in 1968, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He studied both Gujarati and English languages.

He wrote his very first poem on January 31, 1948. This poem was about the death of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1951, two of his poems, called sonnets, were published for the first time. They appeared in Gujaratmitra, a newspaper from Surat. In 1953, he read his poem aloud at a Kavi sammelan, which is a gathering of poets.

In 1955, he started working in the editing department of Gujarat Mitra. He also held important positions in literary groups. He was a trustee of the Kavi Narmad Yugavart Trust. He was also the vice-president of Narmad Sahityasabha in Surat. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad.

Sharma married Jyotiben in 1953. She passed away in 2009. Bhagwatikumar Sharma died on September 5, 2018, in Surat.

Bhagwatikumar Sharma wrote in many different styles. He wrote novels, short stories, poems, and essays.

Sharma wrote different types of poetry, like Ghazals and Sonnets. His first poetry book, Sambhav, was published in 1974. Another notable poetry collection is Atmasaat (2010). This book has 72 sonnets dedicated to his wife, Jyoti, after she died.

He also wrote collections of essays, such as:

He wrote humorous essays in a collection called Supda Saf. His travelogue, which is a book about his travels, is titled America Avje (1996).

Awards and Recognition

Bhagwatikumar Sharma received many awards for his contributions to literature and journalism.

  • In 1977, he received the Kumar Chandrak.
  • In 1984, he was given the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak.
  • He won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988 for his novel Asuryalok.
  • Veer Narmad South Gujarat University gave him an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree in 1999.
  • He received the Kalapi Award in 2003.
  • In 2011, he was honored with the Harindra Dave Memorial Award for journalism. He also received the Vali Gujarati Gazal Award for his poetry.
  • Other awards include the Nachiketa award (1999), Nandshankar Mehta Chandrak (1998), Swami Sachchidanand Sanman (2003), and Darshak Award.
  • In 2009, he received the Narsinh Mehta Award.
  • The Gujarat Sahitya Akademi gave him the Sahityaratna Award in 2017.
