Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bia is the goddess of force or power in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of the Titan Pallas and the goddess Styx, who was the personification of the underworld river Styx. Bia has three powerful siblings: Nike, the goddess of victory; Kratos, the god of strength; and Zelus, the god of rivalry and zeal.

These four siblings were very close to the mighty god Zeus, the king of the gods. They were always by his side, helping him with his plans and battles. Their loyalty to Zeus was unmatched, and they played important roles in establishing his rule over the cosmos.

Who is Bia?

Bia represents raw, physical force and energy. In ancient Greece, force wasn't just about brute strength; it also meant the power to make things happen or to overcome obstacles. Bia was seen as the embodiment of this kind of unstoppable power. While her brother Kratos represented strength, Bia was more about the forceful action itself.

Bia's Family

Bia's family was known for their strong loyalty and powerful abilities.

  • Styx, her mother, was a very important goddess. She was the personification of the River Styx, a famous river in the underworld. Gods would swear their most serious oaths by the River Styx, and breaking such an oath had terrible consequences.
  • Pallas, her father, was a Titan, a race of powerful gods who came before the Olympian gods. He was known for his wisdom and battle skills.
  • Nike, Bia's sister, is the goddess of victory. She is often shown with wings and is a symbol of success in contests and battles.
  • Kratos, her brother, is the god of strength and might. He represents the raw power needed to enforce rules or overcome enemies.
  • Zelus, her other brother, is the god of rivalry and zeal. He represents the passion and eagerness to compete and succeed.

Together, these four siblings formed a powerful team that served Zeus, helping him maintain his authority and defeat his enemies.

Bia's Role in Myths

Bia doesn't appear in many Greek myths on her own, but she is famous for her role in one very important story: the punishment of Prometheus. When the Titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans, Zeus was furious. He ordered that Prometheus be chained to a rock forever as punishment. Zeus sent Bia and Kratos to carry out this difficult task.

Bia, with her immense force, and Kratos, with his great strength, helped the god Hephaestus (the blacksmith god) to chain Prometheus. They made sure Prometheus was securely bound to the rock, where an eagle would visit him daily to eat his liver, which would then grow back overnight. This act showed just how powerful and loyal Bia and her siblings were to Zeus, as they were willing to carry out even the harshest of his commands.

Bia's presence in this myth highlights her role as an enforcer of divine will, representing the unstoppable power of the gods when they choose to exert their authority.
