Bianca L. Viray (born 1983) is an American mathematician and a professor at the University of Washington in Seattle. She studies a special area of math called arithmetic geometry. This field combines ideas from two other math areas: algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. Think of it like solving math puzzles using shapes and numbers together!

Her Journey in Math

Bianca Viray started her math journey at the University of Maryland. She earned her first degree in mathematics there in 2005. Later, she went to the University of California, Berkeley for her Ph.D. (a higher degree). She finished her Ph.D. in 2010. Her advisor, who guided her research, was Bjorn Poonen.

After getting her Ph.D., Dr. Viray worked as a special assistant professor at Brown University. She was also a National Science Foundation (NSF) Postdoc there from 2010 to 2014.

Career and Helping Others

In 2014, Dr. Viray joined the University of Washington as an assistant professor. She was promoted to associate professor in 2017 and became a full professor in 2021. This shows how much her work is valued!

Dr. Viray is also very active in helping other young people, especially girls, get excited about math.

  • She is on the Board of Girls' Angle. This is a math club and magazine just for girls.
  • She helps with the Women In Numbers research network.
  • She supports the Noetherian Ring and the Western Algebraic Geometry Symposium.
  • She has started new programs to help mentor students in math.

In 2017, she gave a special lecture at the University of Oregon. This lecture was for their Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter.

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Viray has received many important awards for her work in mathematics:

  • In 2016, she received an NSF CAREER Award. This award supports young scientists who are leaders in their field.
  • She was chosen as a Simons Fellow in mathematics in 2020.
  • In 2021, she became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This honor was for her work in arithmetic geometry and for helping groups who are not often seen in mathematics.
  • In 2022, she was named a Fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics. This was for her leadership and support of women and girls in math.
  • She received the 2022-2023 American Mathematical Society Joan and Joseph Birman Fellowship. This fellowship helps talented women mathematicians with their research.

Dr. Viray has also held important roles in the American Mathematical Society (AMS). She was a Council member and now serves as the AMS Vice President.
