Biar is a cool town and a 'municipality' (which is like a local government area) in Spain. It's located in the 'comarca' (a region) called Alt Vinalopó, in the province of Alicante. Biar sits right at the bottom of the Serra de Mariola mountains, about 39 kilometers away from the big city of Alicante.
Biar is known for its local industries, especially making things like toys (think dolls!) and beautiful pottery.
Have you ever wondered where a town's name comes from? For Biar, there are two main ideas! One idea is that the name 'Biar' comes from an old Latin word, apiarium, which means "place of bees". This makes sense because Biar used to be famous for making and selling lots of honey! The other idea is that the name comes from an Arabic word, biʿar, which means "well" or "wells". Maybe there were many wells in the area long ago!
Exciting Events in Biar
One of the most exciting times in Biar is the Moros i Cristians (Moors and Christians) festival! This amazing celebration happens every year from May 10 to 13. It's a big party with parades, music, and people dressed up in historical costumes, acting out battles from long ago.
