Big Cone is a special type of hot spring called a geyser. You can find it in the amazing Yellowstone National Park, right in the West Thumb Geyser Basin. This unique geyser sits partly in Yellowstone Lake, making it a really cool sight!
What Makes Big Cone Special?
Big Cone is a unique geyser because it's shaped like a cone. It's made of a rocky material called sinter, which is left behind by the hot water. This cone is about 7 meters (or 23 feet) wide. It rises up from the waters of Yellowstone Lake.
Where is Big Cone Located?
You can spot Big Cone about 7 meters (23 feet) away from the shoreline of Yellowstone Lake. The opening, or vent, of the cone is about 80 centimeters (31 inches) wide. Sometimes, if the lake's water level gets very high, the whole cone might even disappear underwater!
How Often Does Big Cone Erupt?
Big Cone is known for its very rare eruptions. When it does erupt, the water usually shoots up less than 1 foot high. This makes seeing an eruption from Big Cone a truly special and uncommon event!
