Big Piney is an unincorporated community in Pulaski County, Missouri, United States on the southeastern edge of Fort Leonard Wood and one mile west of a bend in the Big Piney River. The community is on Missouri Route TT four miles northeast of Palace. Licking is seventeen miles to the southeast. Its former K-8 school has closed; students attend the Plato R-V School District.

History

A post office called Big Piney was established in 1881, and remained in operation until 1972. The community takes its name from the Big Piney River.

During the American Civil War, Big Piney was manned by companies of the 5th Missouri State Militia.

Transportation

Access to roads out of Big Piney is limited.

  • Highway TT leads west from Big Piney to Highway AW, a paved road running from the south gate of Fort Leonard Wood to Route 17.
  • Access eastward is by unpaved gravel roads which cross the Big Piney River and lead to Duke at Highway J, which runs north to Interstate 44.
  • MO-17.svg Route 17 crosses Interstate 44 at exit 153, runs east through Waynesville, turns north to Crocker, and then runs north out of the county to Iberia. South of I-44.svg Interstate 44, MO-17.svg Route 17 hugs the western edge of Fort Leonard Wood, passes near Laquey, and circles south of the post until it runs out of the county and eventually joins MO-32.svg Highway 32 in Roby.
