Big Pumpkin is a fun children's book. It was written by Erica Silverman. The pictures were drawn by S. D. Schindler. Aladdin Paperbacks published the book in 1992. The story is a bit like an old Russian folktale called "The Gigantic Turnip". It takes place on Halloween. A witch tries hard to get her giant pumpkin off its vine.
The Story of the Big Pumpkin
The story starts on Halloween night. A witch has grown a super big pumpkin. She wants to use it for her Halloween plans. But there's a problem! The pumpkin is stuck tight to its vine. The witch pulls and tugs with all her might. She tries very hard, but the pumpkin won't budge. Halloween is almost here, and she needs that pumpkin!
Soon, a friendly ghost floats by. He sees the huge pumpkin. The witch tells him she can't get it off the vine. The ghost offers to help. He pulls and pulls too. But even with the ghost's help, the pumpkin stays stuck.
Next, a vampire arrives. He also tries to help. Like the witch and the ghost, he pulls on the pumpkin. But it's still too big and too stuck. Then, a mummy comes along. She also notices the giant pumpkin. She joins the others and pulls with them. Still, the pumpkin doesn't move.
Everyone is trying their best. But the pumpkin is just too stubborn. Then, a small bat flies over. The witch, ghost, vampire, and mummy laugh at the bat. They think the little bat can't help. But the bat has a smart idea. He suggests they all work together. They should all pull at the same time!
This new plan works perfectly! They all pull together, one after the other. The pumpkin finally comes off the vine! It flies high into the air. Then it lands right in front of the witch's house.
The witch is very happy. She uses the big pumpkin to make delicious pumpkin pie. She shares the pie with her new friends. The ghost, vampire, mummy, and bat all enjoy the treat. The story ends with the witch planting another pumpkin seed. She hopes to grow another big pumpkin next year!
