Bigton is a small village located on the southern part of Mainland, which is the main island of the Shetland group in Scotland. It is part of the area known as Dunrossness.

Bigton is a charming little village in the Shetland Islands. It's a great place to learn about island life. The village is known for its beautiful views and friendly community.
Where is Bigton Located?
Bigton sits right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. From the village, you can look out across the water. You can see the famous St Ninian's Isle, which is connected to the mainland by a sandy beach. The island of Burra is also visible further north.
Bigton is about 18 miles (29 kilometers) by road from Lerwick. Lerwick is the capital town of Shetland. The village is just off the B9122 road. It lies north of another village called Scousburgh. A smaller place named Ireland is right next to Bigton.
Life in Bigton Village
Even though Bigton is small, it has some useful places for people living there and for visitors. You can find a post office and a shop. There is also a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat.
Bigton's Community Hub
The old church in Bigton, called Bigton Kirk, has a new purpose. In 2021, the Church of Scotland sold it. A local group called Bigton Collective bought it. They turned the old church into a community center. This center is now a place for everyone in the village to meet and hold events.
Farming is also important in the Bigton area. Farmers grow crops and raise different kinds of animals.
Famous People from Bigton
A well-known author, filmmaker, and painter once lived in Bigton. Her name was Elizabeth Balneaves. She lived in the old manse (a house where a minister used to live) in Bigton for the last 20 years of her life. She shared the home with her husband, Dr. James McLauchlan Johnston.
