Indalecio Bizcarrondo, known as Bilintx, was a famous poet from the Basque Country in Spain. He lived from 1831 to 1876. Bilintx was a special kind of poet called a bertsolari. This means he could create poems and songs on the spot, often in the Basque language. He was friends with many important people in his city, like Serafin Baroja. They were part of a group who believed in new ideas, especially during a time of big changes and wars in Spain.
Bilintx: Poet and Storyteller
Bilintx's poems often showed what was happening in his own life. He wrote about his personal challenges and experiences. He is seen as a Romantic poet, meaning his work often focused on feelings and nature. He loved reading poems by other Romantic writers, like the Spanish poet Becquer.
Bilintx also wrote poems in a style called bertso paperak. These were poems printed on sheets of paper. People could buy them easily and sing them. Some of his songs became very popular. One of his most famous poems is Bein batian Loyolan. Today, many people sing this poem to the tune of John Denver's song Annie's Song. A local music band called Egan made it popular in the 1980s.
A Life During Wartime
Bilintx lived during a difficult time in Spain. There were several conflicts known as the Carlist Wars. These wars were fought between different groups who had different ideas about who should rule Spain. Bilintx was sadly killed during the Second Carlist War.
On San Sebastian Day, a special day in his city, a bomb was fired. Bilintx was badly hurt by this bomb. He suffered for several months. He passed away on July 21, 1876. It was a sad coincidence that he died on the very same day that the old laws of the Basque Country, called the Charters (Foruak), were officially ended.
