Bill Houlder's Hockey Journey
Starting with the Capitals
Bill Houlder began his professional hockey journey after being picked by the Washington Capitals in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 82nd player chosen overall. Before joining the Capitals, he played three seasons with the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League, a major junior hockey league.
Houlder joined the Capitals during the 1987–88 season. For three seasons, he split his time between Washington and their minor league team, the Baltimore Skipjacks, in the AHL.
Moving to New Teams
Before the 1990–91 season, Houlder was traded to the Buffalo Sabres. He stayed with the Sabres until 1993, when he was chosen by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft. This draft allowed new teams to pick players from existing teams.
Houlder became what is known as a "journeyman" player. This means he played for many different teams throughout his career. After just one season with Anaheim, he went on to play for the St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, San Jose Sharks, and then returned to the Lightning. His final team was the Nashville Predators.
Retirement from Hockey
Bill Houlder retired from professional hockey after the 2002–03 season, finishing his career with the Nashville Predators. He played a total of 846 games in the NHL, scoring 59 goals and adding 191 assists.
