History of Billings
Billings started out with a different name, "White Rock," in 1893. This was during a big event called the Cherokee Strip Land Run. At first, the town was located about 3 miles (4.8 km) east and 2 miles (3.2 km) south of where it is today.
The town's main activity was farming. In 1899, a railroad company, the Enid and Tonkawa Railway, built a new train line. However, this line did not go through White Rock. So, everyone living in White Rock decided to move the entire town to the new railroad's path.
The new town opened on October 23, 1899. It was then renamed Billings, honoring M. O. Billings, who was a director of the company that helped set up the new town.
