Early Life and Education

Bimal Guha was born in Bajalia Union, which is in the Chittagong District of Bangladesh. His parents were Prasanna Kumar Guha and Manadabala Guha. He was the oldest of four children.

He went to Bajalia High School for his early education. He finished high school in 1968. Later, he studied at Satkania College. He completed his higher secondary education there in 1970.

Bimal Guha then went to the University of Chittagong. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Bengali literature in 1975. He also studied publishing at Napier University. He received special training in editing and publishing in the Philippines and Thailand. In 1997, he earned his PhD from the University of Dhaka. His PhD focused on modern Bengali poetry.

How He Started Writing

Bimal Guha began his writing journey in 1968 while still in school. After his secondary exams, he read Sanchaita, a collection of poems by Rabindranath Tagore. This book inspired him to start writing his own poems.

His very first poem was called Akash (The Sky). It was published in 1969 in Rashmi, the magazine of Satkania College. Soon after, his poems started appearing in many literary magazines and daily newspapers.

His Poetic Style

Guha's first book of poems, Ahongkar, Tomar Shabdo ("Pride, Your Words"), came out in 1982. Over time, his writing style changed. He always looked for new ways to express himself in his books.

He uses special words and images in his poems. These include imagery, similes, metaphors, and symbolism. These elements show his unique way of writing poetry in Bangladesh.

Bimal Guha has written 32 books. His works include poetry, research, and travel stories. He has also edited books and written over 100 articles. These articles are about literature and culture.

His Family Life

Bimal Guha married Meena Guha in 1980. They have three daughters named Ishika, Upoma, and Mithila.

He started working at the University of Dhaka in 1979. For a long time, he was the Head of the Bureau of Publications. Now, he teaches at the Department of Printing and Publication Studies at the same university.
