Early Life of Bina Rai
Bina Rai was born as Krishna Sarin in Lahore, which was part of British India at the time, in 1931. Her family later moved to Uttar Pradesh in India. She went to school in Lahore and then studied at IT college in Lucknow.
Bina Rai lived in Kanpur before she started acting. She really wanted to join films, but her parents were not sure about it. She even went on a hunger strike to convince them! Luckily, they finally agreed to let her follow her dream.
Bina Rai's Acting Career
In 1950, Bina Rai was a first-year student at the Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow. She saw an advertisement for a talent contest and decided to apply. Even though she enjoyed college plays, she had never thought about becoming a film actress.
She went to Bombay (now Mumbai) for the contest. She won the competition, which came with 25,000 rupees in prize money. She also won a main role in Kishore Sahu's film Kali Ghata (1951). This movie became her first film role.
Bina Rai signed her first film contract on her 19th birthday, 13 July 1950. Her first film, Kali Ghata, was released on 13 July 1951. On that same happy day, she got engaged to actor Prem Nath.
Marriage and Film Productions
Bina Rai married actor Prem Nath on 2 September 1952. Prem Nath's sister, Krishna, was married to the famous actor-director Raj Kapoor. Bina Rai and Prem Nath acted together in a few films. Their first movie together was Aurat (1953). This film was a Bollywood version of the old story of Samson and Delilah.
Even though Aurat was not a big hit, Bina Rai and Prem Nath fell in love while making it. After they got married, they started their own film company called P.N. Films. Their first movie from P.N. Films was Shagufa (1953). They had high hopes for it, but audiences did not like it much. Other films they made together, like Prisoner of Golconda and Samunder, also did not do well. So, Bina Rai and Prem Nath were not a very successful acting pair on screen.
Most Famous Roles
Bina Rai's most remembered performances were in films where she starred with actor Pradeep Kumar. She played the main character in Anarkali (1953), Taj Mahal (1963), and Ghunghat (1960). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her role in Ghunghat.
Family in Film
In the 1970s, Bina Rai's son, Prem Krishen, became an actor. He had one big hit movie called Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye (1977). However, he later became a producer and started a company called Cinevistaas. This company made popular TV series like Kathasagar and Gul Gulshan Gulfam.
Bina Rai stopped acting in films many years ago. She said that women don't get good roles after a certain age. She often spoke fondly of her husband, Prem Nath, who passed away in 1992. In 2002, her other son, Kailash (Monty), released a music album to honor his father. Bina Rai's grandson, Siddharth Malhotra, is also a film director. He directed the TV series Sanjivani (2004).
