A Look Back at Birch Creek's History
The area that is now Birch Creek was first mapped out in June 1852. This was done by a team working for the U.S. government. They surveyed the land to create accurate maps.
Mapping the Land
Later that year, another team carefully marked all the "section corners" of the township. This means they walked through the forests and swamps, using tools like chains and compasses to measure and mark specific points on the land. This helped to divide the land into smaller, organized sections.
When they finished, the surveyor described the area. He noted that the land was mostly rolling hills and good for farming. He also mentioned that the area had many types of trees, like pine, hemlock, cedar, and tamarack. There were also some small swamps and streams.
