Birney is a small community in Rosebud County, Montana, in the United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). History of Birney
How Birney Got Its Name
The area near Birney has an interesting past. Another town nearby, called Ashland, was once named Birney too! That was from 1881 to 1886, named after the postmaster there. The Birney we know today was named after a fur trader.

A famous battle called the Battle of Wolf Mountain happened close to Birney. This battle took place in January 1877. It was an important event in the history of the area.

In the late 1950s, Birney was very small. It had a schoolhouse with two classrooms. There was also a small church. The town had a store called the Birney Cash Store, which also held the post office. Another store was called Ranch Stores. Only about six families lived there, with a total of 13 people.

Birney is found along the Tongue River Road. It is close to where the Tongue River meets Hanging Woman Creek. If you travel about 40 miles northeast, you would reach Sheridan, Wyoming. The town of Ashland is about 20 miles southwest. Birney is just outside the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.
