History of Bismarck
The very first settlement in this area was called Franklin. It was founded in 1837, but it didn't last long. It was located west of where Bismarck is now, near where the Hubbard Trail crossed the North Fork of the Vermilion River.
Later, in 1843, two brothers named John and Samuel Myers built a mill nearby. A new town called Myersville grew up around their mill.
In 1872, a new railroad, the C&EI Railroad, was built through the area. However, the tracks didn't go through Myersville. They passed about one and a half miles to the east. Because railroads were so important for travel and trade, the town slowly moved closer to the tracks. Charles S. Young and Dr. John B. Holloway gave land for the new town site. Young decided to name the new town Bismarck. He named it after a famous German leader and chancellor named Otto von Bismarck, whom he admired.
On September 13, 1997, the community celebrated its 125th birthday! About 2,000 people came to the party. There was a parade, fun contests, and historical exhibits at the local school. There were also many performances to enjoy.
In 1998, the village of Bismarck officially became an incorporated village. This meant it could have its own local government. Eleanor White was the first mayor.
