Black Butte Ranch is a special private community and resort in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. It is located in the Cascade Range mountains, about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of the town of Sisters.
While Black Butte Ranch is a private community, it allows visitors to use its restaurants, golf courses, and horse stables. It is a popular spot for both people who live there all year and guests who visit for vacations.

The Story of Black Butte Ranch
Black Butte Ranch was created as a planned community starting in 1970. It was developed by a company called Brooks Resources. This company was part of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Company.
The ranch was built on the land of an old cattle ranch. This land was just south of a mountain called Black Butte. The first people moved into Black Butte Ranch in 1971. A post office was also opened there in the same year.
Where is Black Butte Ranch?
Black Butte Ranch is located in the northwest part of Deschutes County, Oregon. It is found southwest of U.S. Route 20. The entire community is surrounded by the large Deschutes National Forest.
The tall summit of Black Butte mountain, which is 6,436 feet (1,962 meters) high, looks over the community from the northeast. The area has small streams that flow east. These streams eventually join the Deschutes River, which flows north into the Columbia River.

In 2001, about 337 people lived in Black Butte Ranch all year round. By the 2010 census, the population was 366 people.
However, during the busiest tourist times, the number of people in Black Butte Ranch grows a lot. This includes guests who rent homes there. At these times, the population can reach an estimated 5,000 people!
Wildfire Safety
Black Butte Ranch has faced threats from many wildfires over the years. This has been especially true since 2002.
- In 2002, the Cache Mountain Fire burned two homes in the northwest part of the ranch.
- In 2003, the ranch was again threatened by the large B&B Complex Fires.
- In 2007, the GW Fire came very close, within a quarter of a mile (0.4 km) of some homes.
Because of these threats, the community takes wildfire safety very seriously.
