Where the Blackwater River Starts
The Blackwater River begins in a place called Cilleyville. This is a small village in the western part of Andover. The river forms when two smaller streams meet.
How the River Branches Form
- Cascade Brook: This stream starts in Sutton. It flows northeast to Wilmot Flat. Here, it joins with water from Pleasant Lake in New London. Then, it continues east to Cilleyville.
- Frazier Brook: This stream comes from south of Danbury village. It flows south, passing through Eagle Pond in Wilmot. It also goes through Bog Pond before joining Cascade Brook.
The River's Journey
From Cilleyville, the Blackwater River flows east through the town of Andover. It passes by a village called Potter Place.
Flowing East and South
After Andover village, the river keeps winding its way east. It then turns south near an area known as the Blackwater Bays. The river flows over some fast-moving water, called rapids, through the village of West Salisbury.
The Blackwater Dam and Beyond
The river then reaches the Blackwater Dam in the town of Webster. Below this dam, the Blackwater River has a short section of very fast whitewater. After this exciting part, the river becomes calmer. It then flows for its final miles to meet the Contoocook River in Hopkinton.
