Blairstown was officially planned and laid out in 1862. It got its name from John Insley Blair, who was important in building railroads.

Many people in Blairstown enjoy playing a unique game called Rolle Bolle. It is a Belgian yard game, also known as krulbollen in Belgium. Belgian immigrants first brought this game to the area many years ago.

You can find Rolle Bolle courts at the Blairstown Ball Park. A game of Rolle Bolle is always a part of the yearly Sauerkraut Days celebration. This game is also popular in other nearby towns like Belle Plaine and Victor.
