Blas Calzada Terrados was a Spanish economist who played a big role in his country's financial and statistical organizations. He helped shape economic policies and oversaw important parts of Spain's financial markets.
Early Life and Education
Blas Calzada Terrados was born in Valladolid, Spain, on June 8, 1937. He went to the Zorrilla Institute in Valladolid for his early studies. Later, he studied Economics at the University of Valladolid. He also started studying Political Science there.
He spent two years studying in Paris, France. During his time in Paris, he focused on Marxist economics. He also learned about Planning Techniques and National Accounting. These subjects helped him understand how countries manage their money and resources. He even worked at a center that helped foreign officials, thanks to a grant.
A Career in Economics
After his studies, Blas Calzada Terrados returned to Spain. He was hired by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This institute collects and publishes important information about Spain's population and economy. He helped write a technical report about national income.
He then joined the Research Service of the Bank of Spain. The Bank of Spain is like the central bank of the country. He worked there for three years. After that, he spent seven years advising and leading different companies. Many of these companies were in the food industry. He was also one of the people who started the economy magazine Cambio 16.
Leading the National Institute of Statistics
From 1977 to 1979, Blas Calzada Terrados was the Director General of the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This was a very important job. During this time, he helped create the economic plan for the Moncloa Pacts. The Moncloa Pacts were agreements made in Spain to help the country's economy and democracy after a difficult period.
Helping the Stock Market
After his time at the INE, he worked for the Trade Union Board of the Bolsa de Madrid. This is the main stock exchange in Madrid, where shares of companies are bought and sold. He became the Director of their Economic Studies Service.
Later, he was chosen to be the Chairman of the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV). This happened on September 22, 2001. He held this position until October 6, 2004. The CNMV is like a watchdog for the stock market. Its job is to make sure that financial markets work fairly and safely for everyone.
Later Roles
After leading the CNMV, Blas Calzada Terrados continued to be active in the financial world. He became the chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee of the IBEX 35. The IBEX 35 is the main stock market index in Spain, showing how the top 35 Spanish companies are performing. He also became the president of the La Salle Innovation Park.
