Discovering Blennerhassett Island's Past

Blennerhassett Island has a long and exciting story. It was once home to Native American tribes.

Early Inhabitants of the Island

Long ago, Native Americans lived on Blennerhassett Island. Nemacolin, a respected chief of the Delaware Nation, chose this island as his final home. He passed away there in 1767.

How the Island Got Its Name

Later, European Americans started calling the island Backus Island. This was after Elijah Backus bought it in 1792. This happened during a time when many people were moving west after the American Revolutionary War.

In 1798, a man named Harman Blennerhassett and his wife, Margaret Agnew, bought the eastern part of the island. That's how the island got its current name!

The Blennerhassett Mansion

The Blennerhassetts built a beautiful home on the island called Blennerhassett House. This house became famous because of its connection to Aaron Burr. People believed that Burr and Blennerhassett discussed a controversial plan there. This plan was seen as going against the United States government. Sadly, the Blennerhassett House burned down in 1811.

Today, the area where the house once stood is part of the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park. This park helps people learn about the island's unique past.
