What Happens in the Story?
The animals in the woodland are living their normal lives. Then, one morning, two men named Harry and Joe arrive. They start clearing the entire forest with their tractor. Many trees fall, and the animals have to leave their homes. Mrs. Koala's home is destroyed, and a falling tree knocks Blinky Bill out.
When the sun rises, the bush is gone. All the animals are left without homes. They start looking for a new place to live. Blinky Bill wakes up, confused, and calls for his mother. But she is nowhere to be found. Blinky then saves a young female koala named Nutsy from a pile of fallen trees.
They both meet Mr. Wombat. Nutsy tells Mr. Wombat that Blinky can't remember anything. So, Mr. Wombat explains Blinky's life story to him.
Blinky's Past Adventures
Blinky used to be very mischievous. He often caused trouble. Mayor Pelican, his teacher Miss Magpie, and his mother would scold him. Once, he even snuck into Ms. Pym's general store and escaped. His mother would get upset about the trouble he caused. After hearing this, Blinky feels bad about how he treated his mother. He decides he must find her.
Blinky and Nutsy head towards a riverbank. There, they meet Granny Grunty Koala, who has trouble hearing. Further down the river, they find Splodge and his family. Splodge tells them that Mrs. Koala refused to leave her home and was captured.
Blinky and Nutsy then go to where Mayor Pelican is helping the animals find new places. Blinky asks the mayor about his mother. The mayor is not happy to see Blinky. He tells Nurse Angelina to take the children to a leaky cave. Blinky's mother is not there.
Searching for Blinky's Mom
Blinky asks Ruff's mother for directions to the woodchip mill. Even though it's dangerous, Blinky decides to go there to find his mother. Nutsy follows him. They travel through a wild river and thick woods. Finally, they reach the mill. This is where the woodcutters who destroyed their homes work.
The next morning, Blinky and Nutsy see the woodcutters turning their old homes into sawdust. They barely escape a dangerous buzz-saw. They hide until nightfall. As they try to escape, they alert the dogs. Blinky uses a slingshot to break a security light. Harry's wife, Flo, tells her husband to check it out. Blinky manages to get away, but Nutsy gets trapped. She runs and climbs into the bedroom of Claire, the family's daughter.
Blinky sadly goes back to tell the others the bad news. Blinky's friends form a rescue team. They even make Marcia, a marsupial mouse, join them. Blinky has Jacko, a kookaburra, drop Marcia down the woodcutters' chimney. Marcia takes notes of the house's layout. Meanwhile, Nutsy climbs into Claire's bed. Claire wakes up happy to find a real koala. She convinces her parents to let her keep Nutsy for a while.
The Big Rescue Mission
Blinky's gang sneaks up to the house at night. They break in and cause a commotion. Claire quickly hides herself and Nutsy in her bedroom cupboard. Splodge bravely fights off both the dogs and Joe. Blinky keeps Harry and Flo locked in their bedroom. In all the chaos, the woodchip machines start up.
Blinky gets Nutsy out of the house. They both fight off Harry. The crazy events end with Harry and Joe falling into a water tank. Blinky finally finds his mother! They all leave the mill in the woodcutters' truck. Claire waves goodbye to her new koala friends, feeling sad to see them go.
