Blitzen is a ghost town located in the Catlow Valley of southern Harney County, Oregon. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and only a few or no buildings remain. Blitzen is named after the nearby Donner und Blitzen River.
History of Blitzen
Blitzen started as a small community. A post office was set up there on April 10, 1915. It was located about 10 miles south of a place called Narrows. Mr. Stewart was the first person to run the post office.
Why Did Blitzen Become a Ghost Town?
Over time, fewer and fewer people lived in Blitzen. By 1924, only three families remained in the town. The post office kept running for a while as a small mail delivery spot. However, it finally closed in February 1943.
Today, you won't find many signs of people living there. There are still a few old, worn-out buildings at the original town site. This area is now part of a large farm called the Roaring Springs Ranch.
