The Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company was a well-known company from Wheeling, West Virginia. They were famous for their Mail Pouch chewing tobacco. This product was very popular.
Mail Pouch tobacco was advertised on over 20,000 barns. Most of these barns were in the countryside of the Ohio River Valley. Each barn had one side painted with the Mail Pouch name. The advertisements often said, "Treat yourself to the best."
The Bloch brothers started their business in 1879. They began by making cigars. This was a side project to Samuel Bloch's grocery store. They soon found a clever idea. Left-over cigar pieces could be flavored. They were then put into paper bags and sold. This became Mail Pouch chewing tobacco. Today, Mail Pouch chewing tobacco is still made. It is produced by a company called Swisher International Group.
