Blondie Chaplin's Musical Journey
Early Life and The Flames
Blondie Chaplin grew up in South Africa. He is of mixed racial background. When he was just 13 years old, he joined a rock band from Durban called the Flames. Another member, drummer Ricky Fataar, joined when he was only 9.
In 1968, the Flames released their album Soulfire. It included their cover of the song "For Your Precious Love", which became a number one hit in South Africa.
Joining The Beach Boys
Carl Wilson from the Beach Boys heard the Flames perform in London. He was very impressed and signed them to the Beach Boys' own record label, Brother Records. The Flames' album was renamed The Flame to avoid confusion with another band. The Flames were the only band besides the Beach Boys to record for Brother Records.
Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar joined the Beach Boys as full members. This happened because the original drummer, Dennis Wilson, hurt his hand and could not play for almost two years. At that time, another long-time Beach Boys member, Bruce Johnston, had left the band. Also, Brian Wilson was not as involved with the group.
Chaplin left the Beach Boys in 1973 after a disagreement with the band's management. Fataar left the next year.
His Time with The Beach Boys
Blondie Chaplin sang lead on several songs for the Beach Boys. These songs appeared on two studio albums: Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" and Holland. He also played on their live album The Beach Boys in Concert. The song "Sail On, Sailor" from Holland, where he is the lead singer, is known as his "signature song."
Solo Work and Other Collaborations
After leaving the Beach Boys, Chaplin released his first solo album, Blondie Chaplin, in 1977. He also played on Rick Danko's first solo album. This album featured other famous musicians like Ronnie Wood and Eric Clapton.
Chaplin toured with the David Johansen group and helped produce Johansen's album Here Comes the Night. He played guitar, sang backing vocals, and helped write seven songs on that album. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Chaplin toured with the band The Band. He sang some of Richard Manuel's parts and played guitar and sometimes drums.
He also toured with a band that included Rick Danko and Paul Butterfield. Chaplin was a guitarist and singer for Butterfield's last album, The Legendary Paul Butterfield Rides Again, released in 1986. He also wrote a song for it.
Chaplin played on albums for Jennifer Warnes, including Shot Through the Heart, The Hunter, and The Well. He also played on High on the Hog, an album by The Band released in 1996, and contributed his song "Where I Should Always Be."
Working with The Rolling Stones
Blondie Chaplin toured with former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and played on his live album Stranger in This Town.
Starting in 1997, Blondie Chaplin began working with the Rolling Stones. He was a backing vocalist, percussionist, and sometimes a backing guitar player for their recordings and tours for about 15 years. On their album Bridges to Babylon, Chaplin is credited for backing vocals, tambourine, piano, bass guitar, percussion, shakers, and maracas.
Recent Projects
Blondie Chaplin is the singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist for a band called Skollie. He formed this band with fellow South Africans Keith Lentin on bass and Anton Fig on drums. His most recent solo album, Between Us, was released in 2006.
In late 2013, Chaplin performed at some shows with former Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson and guitarist Jeff Beck. Chaplin also appears on Brian Wilson's 2015 album No Pier Pressure. He is the main singer on the song "Sail Away." He then toured with Brian Wilson as a featured performer, along with Al Jardine, from 2015 through 2022.
Beach Boys Recognition
On 29 September 2017, Blondie Chaplin received a special plaque from Roger Williams University. This happened at The Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The plaque honored the Beach Boys' concert on 22 September 1971, at the Ramada Inn in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This concert was the first time Chaplin and Fataar officially performed as members of the Beach Boys. This moment changed the band's live and recording lineup to include a more diverse group of musicians.
