Terrence William "Blondie" Chaplin (born 7 July 1951) is a talented singer and guitarist from Durban, South Africa. He started his music career in the mid-1960s with a band called The Flames. Later, from 1972 to 1973, he became a member of the famous American band The Beach Boys. He sang lead on their popular song, "Sail On Sailor".

After his time with The Beach Boys, Chaplin worked with many other well-known musicians. For about 15 years, starting in 1997, he was a backing vocalist, percussionist, and guitarist for The Rolling Stones on their tours and albums. Blondie Chaplin has also released two solo albums, Blondie Chaplin (1977) and Between Us (2006).

Blondie Chaplin's Early Life and Music Journey

Blondie Chaplin grew up in South Africa. He joined the rock band The Flames when he was just 13 years old. Another future Beach Boy, Ricky Fataar, also joined The Flames around the same time. In 1968, their album Soulfire had a big hit song in South Africa called "For Your Precious Love". It was number one on the radio for 13 weeks!

Joining The Beach Boys

Carl Wilson from The Beach Boys heard The Flames play in London. He was so impressed that he signed them to The Beach Boys' own record label, Brother Records. The Flames were the only band besides The Beach Boys to record for this label.

Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar joined The Beach Boys when their original drummer, Dennis Wilson, hurt his hand. This meant Dennis couldn't play drums for almost two years. At this time, another long-time Beach Boys member, Bruce Johnston, had left the band. Also, Brian Wilson, who was usually the leader, was not very involved. So, Chaplin and Fataar became full members of The Beach Boys, not just musicians helping out.

Chaplin sang lead on several songs from two Beach Boys albums: Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" and Holland. He also played on their live album The Beach Boys in Concert. His most famous song with them is "Sail On, Sailor" from the Holland album. He left the group in 1973 after a disagreement with the band's management.

Working with Other Famous Musicians

After leaving The Beach Boys, Chaplin released his first solo album in 1977. He also played with many other great artists. He toured with the David Johansen group and helped produce one of Johansen's albums.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Chaplin toured with The Band. He sang some of Richard Manuel's parts and played guitar and sometimes drums. He also toured with a band that included Rick Danko and Paul Butterfield.

Chaplin played on albums for Jennifer Warnes and The Band. He also toured with former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor.

Blondie Chaplin and The Rolling Stones

Starting in 1997, Blondie Chaplin began working with The Rolling Stones. He joined them for their Bridges to Babylon album and the tour that followed. For about 15 years, he was a backing vocalist, percussionist, and sometimes a backing guitar player for The Rolling Stones, both in the studio and on their tours. He played many instruments for them, including bass guitar, piano, and various percussion instruments.

Recent Work

Blondie Chaplin is also the singer, songwriter, and lead guitarist for a band called Skollie. He released his most recent solo album, Between Us, in 2006.

In 2013, Chaplin performed with his former Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson and guitarist Jeff Beck. He also sang on Brian Wilson's 2015 album No Pier Pressure and toured with Wilson from 2015 through 2022, including the Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary World Tour.

Blondie Chaplin's Recognition with The Beach Boys

On September 29, 2017, Blondie Chaplin received a special award from Roger Williams University. This award was given to him at a concert in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It celebrated The Beach Boys' concert on September 22, 1971, in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. This concert was important because it was the first time Chaplin and Ricky Fataar officially performed as members of The Beach Boys. This changed the band's live performances and recordings to include a more diverse group of musicians. Chaplin told the audience it was "nice to be remembered this way."
