Bloomington is a community in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is not officially a city yet. This means it is managed by the county government.

The United States Census Bureau counts Bloomington as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This is a special area set up just for gathering population data. In 2020, about 24,339 people lived there. This was an increase from 23,851 people in 2010.

Some people in Bloomington want it to become its own city. This would give them more local control. However, nearby cities like Rialto and Fontana are also trying to expand into Bloomington's area.

Bloomington's Early Days and Growth

Bloomington started as part of a large land project. This project was managed by the Semi-Tropic Land and Water Company. They formed in 1887 to develop land in the area.

In 1907, a big cement factory was built nearby. This factory was called the Riverside Portland Cement Company. To help workers get to the factory, a railroad line was built. This line opened to Bloomington on May 20, 1911. The original part of the community was known as Crestmore.

The Semi-Tropic Land and Water Company planned out several towns. These included Bloomington, Rialto, and Fontana. The plans for Bloomington were made in April 1888. Its first boundaries were set between certain streets and avenues.

Even today, some parts of Bloomington feel like the countryside. Many residents still keep and raise animals.

Efforts to Become a City

Bloomington has tried to become an official city several times. In 1989, the plan did not go through. This was because of money and staff problems.

In 2007, a group called the Bloomington Incorporation Committee (BIC) tried again. They needed to pay a large fee for studies. These studies would show if becoming a city was possible. However, the group did not get an extension to pay the fee. So, their effort failed.

Community Concerns About Warehouses

Recently, people in Bloomington have protested new building projects. In 2022, the county approved a plan to replace an elementary school with a warehouse. This caused many community members to protest.

In 2024, more protests happened. This time, 117 homes were planned to be torn down for warehouses. The county leaders had approved these plans.

Later in September 2024, a judge stopped construction on a large business park. The judge found that county officials had not followed state laws. They did not properly inform people about the environmental effects of the project. The county now has to redo its environmental review. Many community members were upset about losing their homes for a project that might not even happen.
