Starting His Professional Journey
After college, Robert Hamm was not chosen by any team in the 1983 NFL draft. This means he was "undrafted." However, he still got a chance to play professional football. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 9, 1983. Later that year, on August 29, 1983, he was released by the Chiefs.
Time with the Houston Oilers
The very next day, August 30, 1983, the Houston Oilers picked up Robert Hamm. He had a great first year, playing in all 16 games. He even started 12 of those games as a defensive end. During his rookie season in 1983, he recorded three sacks. A sack happens when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
In 1984, he started the season on injured reserve but returned to play. He started the final 12 games of that season. He added two more sacks and recovered one fumble. Recovering a fumble means he picked up the ball after an opposing player dropped it.
Back to the Kansas City Chiefs
On April 30, 1985, the Oilers traded Robert Hamm back to the Kansas City Chiefs. He played in 14 games for the Chiefs in 1985, starting five of them. He made one sack during this time. He was placed on injured reserve again in December 1985 and was released by the Chiefs in November 1986.
Final NFL Teams
In 1987, Robert Hamm signed with the New York Jets in March, but he was released a few months later in June.
Later that year, on September 23, 1987, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts. This happened during a time when NFL players were on strike. He played in three games for the Colts that season. After the strike ended, he was released on October 20, 1987. He signed another contract with the Colts in December 1987, but he decided to retire from football on July 31, 1988.
