Early Life and College Years
Robert Hamm was born on April 24, 1959, in Kansas City, Missouri. When he was older, he went to Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California.
After high school, Bob Hamm played college football for the Nevada Wolf Pack. He was part of the team from 1979 to 1982. He earned a "letter" in 1980 and 1982, which means he played well enough to be recognized by the school for his athletic achievements.
Playing in the NFL
Even though Bob Hamm wasn't chosen in the main 1983 NFL draft, he still got a chance to play professionally. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on May 9, 1983. However, he was released by the team a few months later.
Houston Oilers
Soon after being released by the Chiefs, Bob Hamm was picked up by the Houston Oilers on August 30, 1983. In his first year, 1983, he played in all 16 games and started 12 of them. He even recorded three "sacks," which is when a defensive player tackles the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
In 1984, he was placed on injured reserve, meaning he couldn't play because of an injury. But he returned later that season and started the final 12 games. That year, he had two more sacks and recovered one fumble.
Back to the Chiefs
On April 30, 1985, the Oilers traded Bob Hamm back to the Kansas City Chiefs. During the 1985 season, he played in 14 games and started five. He made one sack before an injury placed him on injured reserve again in December 1985. He was placed on injured reserve once more in August 1986 and was released by the Chiefs in November 1986.
New York Jets and Colts
Bob Hamm signed with the New York Jets in March 1987 but was released a few months later.
Later that year, on September 23, 1987, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts. This was during a time when many NFL players were on strike. He played in three games for the Colts during this period. After the strike ended, he was released on October 20, 1987. He signed a "futures contract" with the Colts in December, which was a deal for the next season. However, he decided to retire from football on July 31, 1988.
