Bob Reade (born July 22, 1932 – died July 5, 2020) was a very successful American football coach. He is best known for leading the Augustana College football team in Rock Island, Illinois. He coached there from 1979 to 1994.
During his time at Augustana, his teams, called the Augustana Vikings, achieved amazing success. They won four national championships in a row in NCAA Division III from 1983 to 1986. They also nearly won in 1982, finishing as runners-up.
One of his most famous achievements was an incredible unbeaten streak. His teams went 60 games without a loss (59 wins and one tie) between 1983 and 1987. This is still the longest unbeaten streak ever in NCAA Division III football history! Coach Reade's teams also won or shared 12 conference championships. He was named Coach of the Year nine times, and the award is now named after him. He was recognized for his great career by being put into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
Playing Football
Before becoming a coach, Bob Reade played football himself. He was a linebacker at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. He graduated from Cornell College in 1954.
Becoming a Coach
Bob Reade started his coaching career at J. D. Darnall High School in Geneseo, Illinois. He coached there from 1962 to 1978. His high school teams had a great record of 146 wins, 21 losses, and 4 ties.
In 1979, Reade became the head football coach at Augustana College. This college is part of the NCAA Division III, which is a level of college sports. He coached Augustana for 16 seasons, retiring in 1994. During his time there, he led the team to 146 wins and 11 appearances in the playoffs.
Awards and Recognition
Bob Reade received many honors for his coaching achievements.
- He was given the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, which recognizes people who have made a positive impact on football.
- In 1998, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. This is a very special honor for coaches and players who have achieved greatness in college football.
- In 1993, Coach Reade also wrote a book called Coaching Football Successfully. The famous coach Joe Paterno from Penn State wrote the introduction for his book.
His Final Years
Bob Reade passed away on July 5, 2020. He left behind a legacy of incredible success and sportsmanship in college football.
