Boban Marjanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Бобан Марјановић), born on August 15, 1988, is a professional basketball player from Serbia. He recently played for the Zhejiang Lions in China. He also plays for the Serbian national team in international competitions.
Boban was a junior world champion in 2007. He played basketball in Russia and Lithuania from 2010 to 2012. After that, he became a big star in his home country. In 2013, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Serbian league.
He then joined KK Crvena zvezda, where he won the national championship and the Adriatic Basketball League (ABA League) in 2015. He also won more MVP awards in Serbia. In 2015, he was chosen as one of the top five players in both the ABA League and the best European club competition, EuroLeague.
In 2015, when he was 27, Boban signed his first contract to play in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs. He also played for the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets. Standing at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 meters) tall, Boban Marjanović was one of the tallest players in NBA history.
Early Life and Basketball Start
Boban Marjanović grew up in Boljevac, a town in eastern Serbia. He was very tall from a young age. Interestingly, his family members are all of average height. His father is only 5 feet 9 inches tall. Doctors think a special condition might have made him grow so tall.
Boban started playing basketball with youth teams in his hometown. When he was 14, he was already 6 feet 10 inches (2.09 meters) tall! He then joined the Serbian professional team Hemofarm. He played in their youth teams until the 2005–06 season.
Professional Career
Early European Teams (2006–2013)
Boban joined Hemofarm's main team in 2006. He played in the Adriatic League. In 2007, he was loaned to another Serbian team, Swisslion Takovo, for half a season before returning to Hemofarm.
In 2010, Boban signed a three-year contract with CSKA Moscow in Russia. However, his coach left, and Boban was loaned to Žalgiris in Lithuania in 2010. He played there until the end of the 2010–11 season.
In 2011, Boban moved to Nizhny Novgorod, another Russian team. He stayed there for half a season. In 2012, he returned to Serbia and played for Radnički Kragujevac on loan.
Later in 2012, Boban signed with Mega Vizura in Serbia. He had a great season and was named the MVP of the Serbian League.
Crvena Zvezda Success (2013–2015)
On July 2, 2013, Boban signed a two-year contract with Crvena zvezda, a famous Serbian team. He quickly became a key player. In December 2013, he was named the EuroLeague MVP of the Round. He was also chosen for the best team in the 2013–14 ABA League season.
In the 2014–15 EuroLeague season, Boban led his team to a big win against Galatasaray. He scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He was again named the EuroLeague MVP of the Round. He even set a new EuroLeague record for the most rebounds in a single season with 256! He also set a record for the most double-doubles (scoring double digits in two different stats) in a season with 16.
In April 2015, he was chosen for the best team in the ABA League. He then helped his team win the 2014–15 ABA League championship and was named the MVP of the ABA League playoffs. In May 2015, he was selected for the All-EuroLeague First Team, meaning he was one of the best players in all of Europe.
On June 5, 2015, Boban was named the Serbian Super League MVP for the third year in a row. Crvena zvezda won the Serbian League championship that year.
NBA Journey (2015–2024)
On July 17, 2015, Boban joined the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. He made his NBA debut on October 30. He even scored 18 points in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers in December. He also became the first Spurs player to get 12 rebounds in 15 minutes or less! On April 13, 2016, he scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
After the 2015–16 season, Boban signed a three-year contract with the Detroit Pistons. On January 5, 2017, he had an amazing game with 15 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. On April 7, 2017, he scored a career-high 27 points coming off the bench.
In January 2018, Boban was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. He scored a season-high 18 points in a win against the Denver Nuggets in February 2018.
On February 6, 2019, Boban was traded again, this time to the Philadelphia 76ers. He played well for the 76ers, helping them get past the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs.
On July 23, 2019, Boban signed with the Dallas Mavericks. On March 11, 2020, he had a career-high 31 points and 17 rebounds in a game against the Denver Nuggets. This was the last game before the NBA season was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He re-signed with the Mavericks in August 2021.

On June 24, 2022, Boban was traded to the Houston Rockets. He was briefly waived by the Rockets in February 2023 but re-signed with them just four days later. On April 14, 2024, in a fun moment, Boban intentionally missed two free throws in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. This was because the Clippers had a deal with Chick-fil-A: if the visiting team missed two free throws in the fourth quarter, fans would get a free chicken sandwich! The announcers cheered, "He gave them chicken! He's a man of the people!"
Recent Career (2024–2025)
In September 2024, Boban returned to Europe and signed with Fenerbahçe Beko in Turkey. He played for them in the BSL and the EuroLeague. However, he left the Turkish team in December 2024.
On January 2, 2025, Boban Marjanović signed with the Zhejiang Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
National Team Career
Boban has also played for the Serbian national basketball team. As a junior player, he won gold medals at the 2007 FIBA Under-19 World Championship and the 2008 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship.
He made his senior debut for Serbia at EuroBasket 2011. In August 2015, the San Antonio Spurs did not allow him to play for Serbia at EuroBasket 2015 because of a foot injury concern.
Boban represented Serbia at EuroBasket 2017. They won the silver medal, finishing second after losing to Slovenia in the final. He played very well, averaging 12.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
At the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Serbia was expected to do very well. However, they were upset by Argentina in the quarter-finals. They finished in fifth place, with Boban averaging 6.8 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Appearances in Films and Television
Boban Marjanović has appeared in several movies and TV shows!
- In 2015, he had a small role as Jānis Krūmiņš in a Serbian sports movie called We Will Be the World Champions.
- In 2019, he played an assassin named Ernest in the action movie John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. In the movie, he fights John Wick (played by Keanu Reeves) in a library.
- In 2021, Boban appeared in a Serbian TV comedy show called Državni posao.
- Boban is good friends with fellow basketball player Tobias Harris. They have been traded to the same teams twice! They also appeared together in a series of commercials for Goldfish crackers in 2021.
- Boban has also been in commercials for State Farm Insurance.
- He appeared in the Netflix movie Hustle, which was produced by LeBron James and Adam Sandler.
- In 2023, Boban played another assassin in the Hulu original comedy thriller movie Self Reliance.
