About Bobby McDonagh
Early Life and Education
Bobby McDonagh was born in Washington D.C., United States. He later went to school at Gonzaga College in Dublin, Ireland. After that, he studied at Balliol College, which is part of the University of Oxford in England. He earned a degree called a Master of Arts (MA) in Classics. While at Oxford, he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1974. This is a very important debating society at the university.
A Family of Diplomats
In 1977, Bobby McDonagh joined the Irish diplomatic service. This means he started his career working for the Irish government in foreign countries. Interestingly, his father, Bob McDonagh, and his brother, Philip McDonagh, were also diplomats. They all served as ambassadors for Ireland.
Expert in European Union Affairs
Bobby McDonagh is known for being an expert on the European Union (EU). The EU is a group of 27 countries in Europe that work together on many important issues. He spent 23 years of his career focusing on EU matters.
- He worked in Brussels, Belgium, which is where the EU's main offices are.
- He was part of the teams for two European Commissioners. These are important officials in the EU.
- From 2005 to 2009, he was the Irish Permanent Representative to the EU. This means he was Ireland's top diplomat working directly with the European Union.
