Learning and Early Career
Daniel Mulhall was born in Waterford, Ireland. He went to University College Cork for his studies. In 1975, he earned a degree. He later received a diploma in education in 1978. In 1979, he completed a master's degree in history.
In 1978, Mr. Mulhall began working for Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs. This department handles Ireland's relationships with other countries. His first role was in the Economics Division. He then moved to a division that helps other countries develop.
Working Around the World
In 1980, Daniel Mulhall's first international assignment was to the Irish embassy in New Delhi, India. An embassy is like an office for a country's diplomats in another nation. In 1983, he returned to Dublin to work in the Political Division.
Later, he became a First Secretary at the Irish Embassy in Vienna, Austria. In 1990, he moved to Brussels, Belgium. There, he worked with the European Union. In 1995, he became a Counsellor in the Press Division. This role involved managing how the Department of Foreign Affairs communicated with the media.
In 1998, he became the first Consul General of Ireland in Edinburgh, Scotland. A Consul General helps citizens from their home country who are living or traveling abroad.
Ambassador to Malaysia and Beyond
In October 2001, Mr. Mulhall became Ireland's Ambassador to Malaysia. He also represented Ireland in Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. This means he was "accredited" to these countries, even if there wasn't a full embassy there.
During his time in Malaysia, a huge natural disaster happened. This was the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Mr. Mulhall helped Irish people who were affected. He worked to get survivors home as part of Ireland's emergency response.
In 2005, he returned to Dublin. He became an Assistant Secretary in the European Union Division.
Ambassador to Germany and the UK
In November 2009, Daniel Mulhall became Ireland's Ambassador to Germany. This was during a difficult time for Ireland's economy.
In 2013, he moved to the Irish Embassy in London. He became the Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He was the Irish Ambassador when the UK decided to leave the European Union in 2016. This event is known as Brexit.
Mr. Mulhall spoke about his "personal sadness" regarding Brexit. He felt it was threatening to undo years of improving relations between Ireland and the UK. He also said that Irish-British relations had been "neglected" during the Brexit vote. He encouraged the British government to stay in a "Customs Union" with the EU. This would help reduce problems for the Good Friday Agreement, which brought peace to Northern Ireland.
Ambassador to the United States
In March 2017, it was announced that Mr. Mulhall would become Ireland's Ambassador to the United States. He arrived in Washington DC in August 2017. He officially became Ambassador after meeting with US President Donald Trump.
After retiring from his diplomatic career in August 2022, Mr. Mulhall started a new role. New York University announced he would become a professor. He teaches a class called "Literature as History: Ireland 1880-1940." He also became a Parnell Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge, for 2022–23.
