Robert Vance Mitchell (October 22, 1943 – September 29, 2019), known as Bobby Mitchell, was an American professional baseball player. He played as an outfielder and designated hitter. An outfielder is a player who fields in the outfield, the area of the baseball field farthest from home plate. A designated hitter is a player who bats in place of the pitcher, but does not play a defensive position.

Bobby Mitchell played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers. He also played professional baseball in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters.

Bobby Mitchell's Early Life

Bobby Mitchell was born on October 22, 1943, in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He went to Norristown High School in his hometown. This is where he began his journey in baseball.

Starting His Professional Career

Mitchell began his professional baseball career when he was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 1965. This is how many players start their path to the major leagues. Later, in 1968, the New York Yankees picked him in a special event called the Rule 5 Draft. This draft allows teams to pick players from other teams' minor league rosters.

Playing in Major League Baseball

Bobby Mitchell made his debut in Major League Baseball in 1970 with the New York Yankees. He played in 273 games in the MLB between 1970 and 1975.

Time with the Brewers

In 1971, Bobby Mitchell was traded from the Yankees to the Milwaukee Brewers. A trade in baseball means players are exchanged between teams. He played for the Brewers in 1971 and then again from 1973 to 1975.

Mitchell's MLB Stats

During his time in MLB, Mitchell was a right-handed batter and thrower. He was 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 185 pounds. He had 143 hits in 609 at bats. An at bat is when a player tries to hit the ball. He also hit 29 doubles (hitting the ball and reaching second base) and six triples (hitting the ball and reaching third base). He also had 14 stolen bases, which means he ran to the next base without the ball being hit.

Baseball in Japan

After his time in Major League Baseball, Bobby Mitchell continued his career in Japan. He played for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He played there from 1976 through 1979.

Mitchell's NPB Stats

In Japan, Mitchell had a successful career. He hit 113 home runs and had 294 runs batted in (RBI). A home run is when a batter hits the ball out of the playing field, allowing them to score a run. An RBI means a batter's hit caused a teammate to score a run.

Later Life

Bobby Mitchell passed away on September 29, 2019, in Sacramento, California. He was 75 years old.
