Bobby Nunn's Music Journey
How it All Started
Bobby Nunn was born in Buffalo, New York, in the United States. As a teenager, he started learning about music. He practiced writing songs, producing music, singing, and playing instruments. He did all this at MoDo Records. This studio was actually in the basement of his family's home!
Bobby and his childhood friend Gene Coplin formed a duo called Bob & Gene. They recorded songs for the Nunn family's own label, Mo Do Records. Their songs were later featured in movies like Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too and Our Family Wedding. In 2011, Bob and Gene were honored by being added to the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame.
Bobby Nunn got a big break by working with the famous musician Rick James. Bobby played keyboards and sang background vocals on some of Rick James's early songs for Motown Records. This included the hit song "You and I" and many songs on Rick James's albums Come Get It! and Bustin' Out of L Seven.
Big Hits and Collaborations
After moving to Los Angeles, Bobby Nunn worked with Earth, Wind & Fire's Philip Bailey. He contributed to the Splendor album. His brother, Billy Nunn, also helped write the song "Mary Jane" with Rick James.
As a solo artist, Bobby Nunn released his first album in 1982 called Second to Nunn. He helped produce this album with Winston Monseque. Bobby wrote or co-wrote almost all the songs on it. The album did very well, reaching No. 148 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
The main song from the album, "She's Just a Groupie," was a big success. It reached No. 15 on Billboard′s R&B singles chart. It also hit No. 28 on the US Dance chart. Years later, the chorus from "She's Just a Groupie" was used in Snoop Dogg's song "Groupie."
Bobby Nunn performed his music on popular TV shows like American Bandstand, Soul Train, and Thicke of the Night. His next album, Private Party, came out in 1983. While some people liked it, it didn't become as popular as his first album. However, his song "Don't Knock It (Until You Try It)" reached No. 65 on the UK Singles Chart in 1984. Another song, "Hangin' Out at the Mall," became a favorite in clubs.
After leaving Motown Records, Bobby Nunn spent time writing and producing music for many other artists and record labels. He wrote "Long Distant Love" and "Welcome to the Club" for Philip Bailey's album Inside Out. He also wrote the hit song "Thank You" for Philip Bailey's Grammy-winning album Triumph. Bobby also worked on The Temptations' album Reunion. In the late 1980s, Bobby Nunn wrote and produced the very popular song "Rocket 2U" for The Jets. This song was a top 5 hit and was nominated for a Grammy award in 1988.
