History of Boechout

Boechout has a long history. It was first mentioned in official records way back in the year 974. At that time, it was called "Villa Buocholt." It belonged to a place called the Saint Bavo's Abbey in Ghent.

Boechout was once part of the Duchy of Brabant. This was a powerful area in the past. In 1357, the Count of Flanders took control of Boechout, along with Antwerp and Hove. But in 1406, Boechout was given back to Brabant.

The town faced tough times during wars. It was badly damaged several times in the 1500s. It also suffered a lot of damage during World War I. In 1977, the nearby town of Vremde [nl] officially joined Boechout to form one larger municipality.
