History of Bogue Chitto
Bogue Chitto is known for an important event that happened nearby in 1964. This was during a time called the Freedom Summer. People were working to help African Americans register to vote. Three young civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, disappeared in June 1964.
Their disappearance and the search for them brought a lot of national attention. Their bodies were found later that summer. This sad event helped push the United States to pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This law made it illegal to stop people from voting because of their race. The story of these events was also shown in the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning.
