The Bois Brule River, often called the Brule River, is a beautiful river in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. It is about 43.9 miles (70.7 km) long. The river starts in central Douglas County near Upper St. Croix Lake. It then flows through the Brule River State Forest and finally empties into Lake Superior.
What's in a Name?
The name Bois Brule comes from the Anishinaabe language. In Ojibwe, the river is called Wiisaakode-ziibi. This means "a river through a half-burnt woods." This Ojibwe name was later translated into French, and then into English.
A River of History
The Brule River has an interesting history. In 1842, a battle took place here. It was called the Battle of the Brule. This battle was between the La Pointe Band of Ojibwe people and a group of Dakota Sioux.
Many years later, in 1928, a United States President spent his summers here. President Calvin Coolidge used a place called the Cedar Island Lodge as his "Summer White House." This lodge is located right on the upper part of the Bois Brule River. Today, the property is owned by the families who started the company 3M.

The Bois Brule River is a popular spot for outdoor activities. It is especially famous for its trout fishing. Many fly fishermen love the river because of the many mayflies and stoneflies that hatch there. These insects are a favorite food for fish.
The river is also great for white-water canoeing. If you enjoy paddling, you'll find exciting spots along the Brule. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources helps take care of the river and the surrounding area. They have a fish hatchery here, which helps keep the fish population healthy. They also have a ranger station that manages the state forest and nearby campgrounds.
