Bolesław II the Generous, also known as the Bold or sometimes the Cruel, was an important ruler in the history of Poland. He was born around 1042. Bolesław first ruled as the Duke of Poland from 1058 to 1076. Later, he became the third King of Poland, reigning from 1076 to 1079.

Who Was Bolesław II?
Bolesław II was a member of the Piast dynasty, a very old ruling family in Poland. His father was Casimir I the Restorer, who helped rebuild Poland after a difficult period. His mother was Maria Dobroniega of Kiev. Bolesław took over the rule of Poland after his father passed away.
Becoming Duke of Poland
When Bolesław became Duke in 1058, he was still quite young. He worked hard to make Poland stronger. He focused on building up the country's power and influence. He also tried to make the Polish church more independent.
Becoming King of Poland
In 1076, Bolesław achieved a major goal. He was crowned King of Poland on December 26, 1076. This important event happened at Gniezno Cathedral. Becoming king showed that Poland was a strong and independent country. It also showed Bolesław's power as a ruler.
Family Life
Bolesław II was married to Wyszesława of Kiev. Together, they had a son named Mieszko Bolesławowic. His family life was an important part of his role as a ruler. Having a son meant there was an heir to continue the Piast dynasty.

Bolesław II's reign as king was not very long. He died around 1081 or 1082 in Kingdom of Hungary. The exact place where he was buried is debated, but some believe it is at Ossiach Abbey. Bolesław is remembered for his efforts to strengthen Poland. He also worked to increase the power of the Polish monarchy. His nicknames, "the Generous" and "the Bold," reflect different views of his rule.
