The Bombay mango is a special type of mango that first grew in Jamaica. It's known for its unique taste and how it helped create other mango varieties.
How the Bombay Mango Started
The Bombay mango began its journey from a seed. This seed was brought to Jamaica by people who moved there from India in the 1800s. The fruit quickly became popular because of its delicious flavor.
Later, the Bombay mango was brought to the United States. It arrived in south Florida, where it is now grown and sold in plant nurseries.
A Parent Mango
Scientists studied different mango types in Florida in 2005. They found that the Bombay mango is like a parent to several other mangoes. These include types like Bailey's Marvel, Jacquelin, and Zill. It is believed that these mangoes were created by crossing a Haden mango with a Bombay mango.
What the Bombay Mango Looks Like
The Bombay mango fruit usually weighs less than one pound. It stays mostly green even when it's ripe, with only a little bit of red color.
The inside of the mango is a deep orange color. It has no stringy fibers, which makes it very smooth to eat. People describe its flavor as rich and spicy. A cool thing about this mango is that its seed is very easy to remove.
The trees that grow Bombay mangoes are strong and grow quickly. They form open, spreading branches.
