Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and Don't Come Back!!) is a fun animated movie from 1980. It was made by United Feature Syndicate and released by Paramount Pictures. The movie was directed by Bill Melendez and Phil Roman. This was the fourth full-length film based on the famous Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz.

Charles M. Schulz, who created Peanuts, got the idea for this story from his own life. He visited a castle called Château Malvoisin when he was a soldier during World War II. This castle is very important in the movie.

You could watch this movie at home on VHS and Laserdisc starting in 1995. Later, it was released on DVD in 2015.

The Story of the Trip

At Charlie Brown's school, Linus Van Pelt introduces two new students from France. Their names are Babette and Jacques. They will stay for two weeks to learn about the United States. In return, Charlie Brown and Linus are chosen to go to France!

Charlie Brown goes home and asks Snoopy and Woodstock to come with him. Then, Peppermint Patty calls him. She says that she and Marcie were also chosen for the student exchange trip. Charlie Brown also gets a letter from France. He cannot read it because it is written in French. He feels worried about the trip because of this mystery letter. Marcie, who has been studying French, translates it for him. The letter says that Charlie Brown is invited to stay at a French castle. It's called the Château du Mal Voisin, which means House of the Bad Neighbor.

Adventures in Europe

The group first arrives in London, England. Snoopy leaves them for a bit to play tennis at Wimbledon. He gets into an argument with the referee about a ball being in or out. Snoopy gets very upset and is banned from the tennis grounds!

Next, they cross the English Channel to France on a hovercraft. They pick up a small French car, a Citroën 2CV. Snoopy has to drive it because no one else has a driver's license. He enjoys making the gears grind!

When they arrive, the friends go to their different homes. Patty and Marcie stay at a farm. There, they meet a boy named Pierre. Both girls are interested in him. It's clear that Marcie and Pierre like each other. But Patty thinks Pierre likes her instead.

Meanwhile, Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy, and Woodstock go to the castle. It seems empty and abandoned. But someone keeps leaving food for them and making their beds. This happens after they leave for school each day. The castle is actually owned by a grumpy baron. The person leaving food is his kind niece, Violette Honfleur.

Secrets of the Chateau

Linus decides to explore the castle. He finds Violette and asks her what is happening. Violette explains that her uncle is often grumpy. But she remembers what a U.S. Army soldier did for her family. He helped them during World War I.

Violette shows Linus a picture of the soldier. Linus says the soldier looks like Charlie Brown. It turns out the soldier is actually Charlie Brown's grandfather, Silas Brown!

The baron returns home. Violette tries to hide Linus. But she accidentally drops a candle, and the castle's attic catches fire! Charlie Brown runs to get Peppermint Patty and Marcie. Pierre calls the fire department. Snoopy and Woodstock find an old fire hose in a shed.

Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Pierre work together. They rescue Linus and Violette from the fire. Snoopy uses the hose to keep the fire under control. The fire department finally arrives to help put it out completely.

A Happy Ending

The baron is very thankful that his castle was saved. He changes his grumpy attitude and lets the friends stay inside. Charlie Brown finally learns the truth about the mysterious letter he received from Violette.

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Patty, and Marcie say goodbye to their new friends. They explore more of the French countryside. Eventually, they return home to the United States.
