Bonaire is a small community in Houston County, Georgia. It is an area that is not officially a city or town. Bonaire is about 6 miles south of Warner Robins. It is part of the larger Warner Robins area. You can find Bonaire near U.S. Route 129. This road connects to Interstate 75 by Georgia State Route 96.
Bonaire is the hometown of Sonny Perdue. He was a former governor of Georgia. He also served as the 31st United States Secretary of Agriculture. The TV show "Critter Fixers" is filmed in Bonaire.
History of Bonaire
The community of Bonaire began around 1888. People started to settle here when the Georgia Southern & Florida railway was built. This new train line came right through the area. At first, the name was spelled without the "e" at the end. But by 1889, the modern spelling "Bonaire" was used. The name "Bonaire" is believed to be from French. It means "good air."
The state of Georgia officially made Bonaire a town in 1912. However, its official town status ended in 1995. On April 5, 2022, a strong tornado hit Bonaire. It caused a lot of damage to homes and trees. Power poles and lines were also knocked down.
