Bond's Railroad History
Bond was first planned as a stop for the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad. This railroad was supposed to go all the way to Craig, Colorado. Bond was chosen because it was the closest point to another major train line. That line belonged to the Denver and Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) railroad. It passed through Dotsero, about 40 miles (64 km) away.
Later, the D&RGW bought the rights to connect the two lines. This created a more direct route to Denver. Bond then became the northern end of what was called the Dotsero Cutoff. The tracks from Bond to Craig became a smaller side line. Bond remained an important stop for the D&RGW's passenger trains. The last train, the Rio Grande Zephyr, stopped running in 1983.
