Early Life and Challenges

Bones Hyland grew up in Delaware. He started playing basketball after watching his older brother and a friend. They often played at the park. He got the nickname "Bones" because he was very thin.

Bones went to St. Georges Technical High School in Middletown, Delaware. During his junior year, he faced a very difficult time. He was in a house fire and had to jump from his second-floor bedroom to escape. He hurt his knee badly, tearing a tendon. This injury kept him from playing basketball for six months.

Despite this challenge, Bones worked hard to recover. In his senior year, he played amazingly well. He scored about 26.6 points per game. He also grabbed 6.6 rebounds, made 4.6 assists, and got 3.4 steals per game. He led his team to the state tournament semifinals. He was named Delaware Player of the Year. He also earned first-team All-State honors.

Bones was a highly sought-after player by colleges. He decided to play college basketball for VCU. He chose VCU over many other schools.
